The Rochester Hills Fire Department has been using a new technology to alert drivers to the presence of emergency vehicles since March, 2019. All of the Fire Department's emergency apparatus are now equipped with a transmitter that will signal the WAZE app for Apple or Android. If a driver has this app installed on their mobile device, an alert will be received when an emergency vehicle is approaching their location or parked on a scene nearby. This will help drivers be more alert to emergency vehicles in the roadway and keep themselves and emergency personnel safe on the roads. Working in the roadway is one of the most dangerous tasks a first responder can perform. Nationwide, seven first responders have been killed in a roadway in 2020. Check out the great story that Channel 7 news released on January 22, 2020. The WAZE app is free to download and offers other features such as mapping and real time traffic updates.
